The story of Hinkley Lighting began in 1922, when Phil R. Hinkley founded the eponymous Phil R. Hinkley Company in Cleveland, Ohio. Initially, the company specialised in outdoor copper lanterns and included just fourteen products in its debut catalogue.

Since the late 1930s, Hinkley has been owned by the Wiedemer family. A fourth generation has joined the company and Richard Wiedemer Jr, of the third generation, is its president.
