Desert Chic

If you dream of long lazy days spent in your hammock and hikes through the arid desert, chances are you’ll be ready to jump on to this fantastic, eclectic interior design trend. In recent years, the Californian desert has become the ultimate destination for fashionistas and music fans alike thanks to the Coachella festival and it’s easy to see how aspects of the fashion surrounding the event have filtered down into interiors.

When thinking about creating a desert-inspired home, the key is to take an eclectic approach with lots of boho touches and unusual artefacts. These may include real (or fake for the squeamish) animal skulls with horns or antlers, large indoor plants with imposing branches and leaves and lots of handmade accessories dotted around. You can afford to go bold and bright with splashes of colours such as yellow, turquoise, pinks and reds, with patterned rugs, cushions, throws and blankets. Mixing natural and textured fabrics with copper, pewter and silver light fittings is a sure-fire way of nailing this look by adding different layers and combining the old and the new.

Of course, no desert-inspired home would be complete without the obligatory cacti. Even if you’re not fond of the real thing (and if you have little ones around you may want to avoid large a large cactus plant), there are plenty of ways to pepper your home with this ubiquitous symbol of the desert – a cactus-shaped light, prints, fabrics with cactus print can all add a fun touch and a strong sense of style to your home.
