When talking about fluorescent tube lighting, often we call to mind the type of bright white, flickering light that might have been used in an old fashioned kitchen, or maybe an office. Fluorescent tubes have traditionally been used for their practical applications for both the home and the workplace, and because of cost, and energy efficiency – and so they have been manufactured to a range of sizes, from 225mm, through to 1800mm (6 ft).

Fluorescent tubes are available in a range of colour temperatures, so they can be an option in spaces that they weren’t before. The different colour temperatures that you can choose fluorescent tubes from include:

2700 -3000K warm white (a relaxing light temperature)
3001 -3500K white (still quite a relaxing tone but a little bit sharper)
3501 -4000K cool white (a more practical type of task lighting, possibly for the kitchen)
4001 -6000K Daylight (a very sharp, clear light suitable for working environments)

Choosing the right colour temperature isn’t the only consideration when buying fluorescent tubes – there are a number of different types of cap fittings, so it is recommended to replace like with like. If that isn’t possible to know, then we may be able to hep – you can contact our team for advice.

Colour temperature and cap size aren’t the only things to consider. If you need the light to be dimmable, you’ll need to ensure the fluorescent tube you buy has the ability to do that – and there are both fluorescent, and LED styles that can do that.

As with most types of lighting, LEDs are starting to replace fluorescent tubes. LEDs offer much greater reliability and a longer-lasting solution to fluorescent styles, are cheaper to run. They also don’t have the issues with flickering effects that older fluorescent tubes often get complaints about – so they can be a better option where changing the existing light fitting is difficult, or not an option.
