Living Room Lighting – Set The Mood

Nowadays you need a living room that offers many different things in one versatile package, and good lighting can help you achieve that. Maybe your living room is part of a family home that needs a main light source for when the children do their homework, separate lighting for dinnertime and cosy, ambient lighting for relaxing in front of the TV. For those who want a high-tech, modern living room, we have a complete range of spotlights and floor lamps, perfect for parties and weekend entertaining. Whatever your requirements, we’re sure to have the exact lights you need for creating a living space that you’ll never want to leave. Click here for living room light fittings.

Dimmer Switches

The days of the lone light bulb hanging forlornly from the ceiling are well and truly over – nowadays lighting makes a statement – it lets people know what you, your home and even your family is about. It should also be about enhancing your life – emphasising design features or even being a feature in itself and it should transform your living room from a singular one-dimensional room into a space that has many uses and functions. Living room lighting also means choice when it comes to using a main light, using lots of smaller, secondary lights or combining both for complete lighting control.

You may want to use just a main light if your living space is a constant hub of domestic activity; if you work from home in the evenings, or help the children with their homework. To make switching between a starker main light and a warmer, softer light easy, you could install a dimmer switch for instant control. You can also use softer, secondary lighting such as floor lamps, table lamps or uplighters to disperse light or light up areas and corners of a room that are usually left in darkness, which helps to open your living room up. A picture light over pieces of art or photographs can create eye-catching features, and try installing reading lamps for those evenings when you just want to sit with a good book and shut out the world.

Enchanting Illumination

Lovers of glamour out there will be drawn to the Edit Souk Ceiling Pendant which is an excellent choice for darker rooms as it reflects light really well. Install this gorgeous ceiling light for illumination that sparkles and bounces – perfect for creating a wonderful centre-piece in the middle of your room.

A Time For Reflection?

Classic and simple, the Edit Mathis Plaster Up & Down Wall Light can be painted to fit in with any colour scheme thanks to an unglazed ceramic finish; but what makes this really special, is the fact that it softens light and prevents glare by throwing light upwards and down. It is a very useful light for installing in rooms that need strong illumination without the glare, such as a study.

The Perfect Lighting Relationship

A versatile light for your living room is the Montana ‘Mother and Child’ Floor Lamp – Satin Chrome. This cool looking light has dual functionality, serving as a standard floor uplighter – perfect for creating cosy ambience – or making relaxing with a good book easy thanks to a task-specific reading light. This is also a great tool for keeping energy bills down as you don’t have to keep the main light on just to read, or it can be an excellent tool for those of you who need the added comfort of a reading light coupled with a main light to avoid eye strain. Place it in a corner along with your favourite armchair to create the perfect reading space.

Home Sweet Home

If you like traditional styles, but you like them to have an edge, then the striking Dar Oporto could be the table lamp for you. The rich, eye-catching tones of the design make this a lamp that could sit easily in most rooms from the bedroom to a grand hallway. Its classic, thoughtful design means it won’t go out of fashion any time soon and will be around for years to come.

Buck The Trend

Now for the piéce de resistance – the Edit Rod 15 Arm Pendent is for those of you who enjoy something more than a little different. This industrial style light would make an excellent, eye-catching centre-piece that will bring a bit of drama in to your home! Why not place it in the middle of your room and build up the rest of your décor around it? If you have a very large living space, you could even hang two at opposite ends of the room, to make a bold and interesting statement – perfect for hosting parties, entertaining or just relaxing and playing cards with the family.

So, now that we’ve established how important living room lighting is, why not have a browse through our selection and take your pick?

Top 10 IP Rated Outdoor Lights

When thinking about lighting any outdoor space, one of your biggest considerations is of course the weather. Hard to ignore at the best of times, the British weather throws up specific challenges that any outside lights you buy need certified protection against.

Lighting Direct’s versatile range of IP rated outdoor lights is not only guaranteed to cover your outside lighting needs in complete safety, but doesn’t require you to compromise one bit on design and aesthetics in the process. In this article we take a look at 10 top IP rated outside lights to give you some inspiration.

IP ratings explained

Before we get started, it’s fair to say water and electricity aren’t a good mix, and so outside lighting products need to be built to make sure the two never come into contact. That’s where the IP rating system comes in. Using a series of numbers, each with specific meanings, it tells you exactly which environmental elements the IP rated product is protected against – for example dust, water and the like – and to exactly what degree.

For more information on IP Ratings, including a full breakdown on what the numbers themselves actually stand for, check out our IP Ratings Explained guide. Suffice to say the IP system gives you guaranteed peace of mind. The IP code tells you exactly the weather conditions an outside light is certified to withstand, and exactly those it isn’t.

Outdoor lighting for Architects and Designers

First impressions count. That’s why lighting is a key element in the process of designing the exterior of any new home. Driveways, paths, patios, decking and all outside areas can be enhanced by effective and attractive lighting solutions. Lighting Direct offers a comprehensive range of first class products to meet all your design and budget requirements.

Front of House

The approach to the house at night offers the first opportunity to create a vivid impression. Using LED floodlighting at the top of a driveway can produce a dynamic effect and illuminating boundary foliage can make a particularly powerful impact. A colour changing floodlight certainly makes a telling first impression. Good lighting in this area has the added benefit of providing a valuable element of security.

As cost efficiency is so important these days, floodlights can be bought with a dusk to dawn sensor option ensuring illumination only when required. At Lighting Direct you will find a selection of shatter-proof floodlights for use in all outdoor locations. We also offer a Slim-line High Power LED floodlight for narrower spaces where the emphasis is on design rather than pure functionality.

The Driveway

If you are aiming for a ‘runway’ effect for the driveway it’s worth considering the use of LED ground-lights or stake lights to highlight the route to garages and the front door. These ground-lights are now available in square or rectangular formats to make an even more eye catching design statement at the edge of the driveway.

The Entrance

Lighting Direct products also give you the opportunity to make a stylish entrance to the house itself. LED planters for example would fit the bill admirably. Choose a size to match the proportions of the doorway to ensure that the planters are not fully exposed to the elements. The crisp white light from this option provides a bright and welcoming zone.

Another option for the doorway could be LED wall lights. Aesthetically pleasing with a smart silver finish, Callisto Small Wall Lights for instance, can really add style to an external area. These recessed wall lights could also be fitted in the garage area to generate a pleasing and unified look.

The Garden

Despite the absence of Mediterranean weather, we British do like to spend time in our gardens. Patios and decking have become an increasingly popular feature of property development and offer great opportunities for the lighting designer to develop the right mood and ambience in this part of the garden. The right lighting enables al fresco entertaining to continue into the early hours providing the home-owner with extra living space. For the patio area, a whole range of ground and wall mounted lighting is available. For decking, consider the Metro Set of 10 Ground Lights for visually interesting impact. Once again, LED planters or carefully positioned floodlights highlighting climbing plants can bring this area to life after dark.

Whatever feature in the garden you want to illuminate – walls, paths, water features, plants – Lighting Direct has a solution. For example lighting can be a valuable design tool to enhance and highlight interesting brickwork and bring particular textures and finishes to life. Exterior LED tile lights are the ideal way to add interest to exterior walls and other solid surfaces.

Garden path lighting is also an important area and needs to be both functional and attractive. Interesting and innovative developments in design and technology have led to new products such as stone effect LED posts, which may have the finish that complements your garden design.

Illuminating lawns and borders with stake lights can look striking after dark. For a stylish contemporary design, take a look at the Marlow Garden Spotlight – Satin Silver. In the garden itself, specimen trees and shrubs would look very attractive with floodlighting.

A consistent look across all parts of the garden can easily be achieved with the extensive range of products available at Lighting Direct.

Outside lights – six of the best

You might not always give much thought to the light that sits outside your front door, but these hard-working lights perform a range of useful duties. Your outside light welcomes you home, welcomes your guests, and effectively introduces your house. You can choose from a range of outside lights to perfectly represents your sense of taste, making that perfect addition to the outside of your home, whether you prefer a sleek, modern look or are more of a traditionalist.

Safety first

Perhaps even more important than style and warmth, though, is security. Not only will an outside light allow you to see clearly who’s coming to your door. It will also bathe you in light as you look for your keys when you come home on dark winter evenings. You can also use your outside light to make your place look ‘lived in’ when you’re away.

Top outside lights

There are many different styles of outside light on the market, to suit your style, pocket and lighting requirements. One of the most popular is the Vejers down wall light, which is a wall-mounted model in a corrosion-resistant black finish. This Danish-made unit brings a touch of European style to your house, with stylish vanes and a sturdy build that will resist the worst of the British weather.

As its name suggests, the Horizon Bulkhead will bring clean, contemporary and hardwearing style to your doorstep. It has a black-finished polycarbonate casing, a modern-looking ribbed diffuser, and a large frosted opal dome, providing plenty of light.

The Oslo outdoor wall light is not just a pretty face, though it is certainly that, with a modernist stainless steel finish and a barred window. It’s also packed with features, including a passive infra-red sensor( PIR), which will switch the light on when anything moves within 10 metres. You can also customise the brightness of the light and the length of time it’s on for, to suit your needs.

If you don’t need all those features, but like the style of the Oslo light, another option would be the Mini Seine Low Energy Wall Light. This light offers a similar contemporary combination of stainless steel and bars of light, but in a straightforward low energy light that will provide great results and save you money on your energy bills. A durable finish means the Mini Seine can put up with a range of weather conditions.

If you are looking for a more traditional style of light for your doorstep, the Norfolk Wall Hanging Lantern offers a classic lantern shape in black. Finishing off the design, leaded glass panels look great and add wonderful texture to the light produced. The Norfolk lantern is also available as a Pedestal lantern, so you can perch it anywhere you like.

If you have a porch with a high ceiling, or are looking to hang a light from an arch, the Luxembourg pendant may well be exactly what you need. With a high quality vintage-effect rust finish and a glass shade, this lamp will bring classic European style to your house or garden.

Not just for your doorstep

These lights aren’t limited to porches and doorsteps either. You can use them to create stylish patio lighting, shed light on the alley down the side of your house if you live in a semi or a detached house. They’re also great for lighting up car-ports and storage areas, and if you’re lucky enough to have a pool, you can use them to add light for evening swims or pool-side al fresco dining (when it stops raining).
