Bedroom Lighting To Fall In Love With

Is your master bedroom a bit lacklustre? Do you desire a beautiful boudoir to retire to at the end of a stressful day? If the answer is yes, then why not create your own intimate setting and bring romance back to your everyday life.

The power of the senses; hearing, touch, sight, and smell all bring to life the romantic ambience of the room. Imagine poetry by Keats, crackling fires, soft velvety fabrics and warm golden walls and start to put together a mood board for creating your own romantic bedroom.

Define your style by starting with the lighting. It’s all about the balance between art and science and the secret is in the clever layering of light to add texture and interest to the room.

How About A Few Suggestions?

Chandeliers:

A chandelier adorned in crystals is the epitome of romantic lighting when hung as a centre piece in your bedroom. The chandelier radiates elegance and will throw beautiful patterns of light across your walls and ceiling to create the perfect sanctuary. Choose one that can be dimmed so you can balance the lighting for maximum effect. Have a look at our range of chandeliers suited to the bedroom.

Table Lamps:

Avoid lighting above the bed which is harsh on the eyes when looking up. Choose eye level table lamps positioned either side of the bed to add ambience to your bedroom. Select delicate lamp bases for a graceful touch or choose bold shades in rich plum tones for a sophisticated look. Don’t be afraid to use black either for your lamp shades for a sense of drama. Drape fairy lights around your headboard and add different textures with sumptuous bed linen and soft throws to complete the look.

Wall Lights:

A beautiful vintage mirror above a dressing table will add glamour to your romantic setting. Illuminate with a couple of ornate wall lamps either side of the mirror for a serene and inviting space.

Floor Lamps

Fill darker spaces in your bedroom with a portable light source that can be moved around the room. Create a cosy corner to snuggle up in with a floor lamp positioned next to a chaise longue. Cover it with scatter cushions in rich velvets, faux fur, satins and silks to elevate the romantic vibe.

Always choose dimmable lighting when creating a romantic bedroom as they can be fully illuminated when you need task lighting for selecting clothes from your wardrobe and applying make-up. They can then be toned down instantly for a more soothing atmosphere. Mix up your lighting with scented candles and add a vase of freshly cut flowers to saturate the air with sweet smells. Fill your room with gorgeous objects that capture your heart and turn your bland bedroom into a beautiful boudoir.

Sweet Dreams in the Nursery

For very little ones, peaceful and soothing lighting will help them drift off to sleep at night. Choose lighting that can be dimmed for a soft gentle glow. Consider a flush light such as the Speedy Flush with its attractive moon and stars design. As it sits flush against the wall or ceiling there are no potentially dangerous cables or cords to be grabbed at by little hands.

Playful lights for your Juniors

Children need to feel safe and happy in their room otherwise getting them up to bed can prove challenging! Choose fun and quirky fittings for younger children with hearts, flowers and happy smiley faces as seen in the Junior Girls Hearts and Flowers Flush which will be an instant hit. For the little boy in your life why not choose something like the Junior Boys Cars and Clouds Flush for a cheerful and welcoming bedtime light.

If your son is mad about footie then why not create a football themed bedroom with the Junior Football Flush taking centre stage. Funky Lights for Teens

It’s probably fair to say that teenagers are the group of people who spend most time in their bedrooms away from the madness of family life. They want a space that they can call their own where they feel at ease. Bring some scorching hot colour to their room with a funky light fitting such as the Jive Pendant – lime. Alternatively add impact to their décor with the contemporary Ripasso 15 Pendant – Red for a touch of sophistication.

As well as chilling in their bedroom under ambient lighting, you may want to choose some task lighting for their studying and bedtime reading. Choose a retro styled adjustable lamp for the desk such as the Osaka Clip-On Desk Lamp – Blue Gloss and angle to reduce glare from the computer screen. The Cyclone Wall Light – Aluminium will work well positioned on the wall next to the bed and can be angled to focus directly onto the pages of their favourite book.

How to find the perfect bedside lamps?

The right bedside lamps can really help to create a comforting and relaxing atmosphere. Subtle lighting is a key factor when it comes to bedroom ambience and the perfect bedside lamps can make all the difference. Here are some things to consider when choosing bedside lighting.

What to consider?

Room Size

A bedside lamp must be in keeping with your room’s dimensions; a small lamp will look lost in a large room and a larger lamp will overpower a more compact space. The same is true when looking at the size of your actual bedside table.

The look

The style of lamp you choose will need to complement its surroundings. Consider the textures and materials of your bedroom furnishings before making your choice.

Ambience

Ambience is paramount when selecting a bedside lamp. Choose a warm white light source for a cosy atmosphere or a cooler white light for task/reading lighting.

Ambient bedroom lighting

A room that never sleeps

There was a time when the only reason anyone would ever go to their bedroom, would be to retire to bed. Sounds obvious and simple, but the modern bedroom is now so much more than just a ‘sleeping room’. People spend a lot of their evening time in the confines of their bedroom, on laptops, listening to music, watching movies and playing computer games. It’s no wonder then, that the way people deck out their bedrooms has really changed too. Gone are paisley covered duvets and flowery wall paper “complemented” by one single, dull lightshade hanging from the ceiling. Now we have stylish leather headboards, wooden floorboards and cool chrome lights. You can choose to have spotlights, downlights, uplights, floor lamps, dimmable lights, halogen lights and more – the choice is yours. So when trying to create that perfect bedroom – a place that holds exactly the right sort of ambience for working, playing and sleeping, what kind of lights should you go for?

Take a look at our handy guide to Bedroom Lighting and find out :

Romance on your mind

When wanting to create light that gets you in the mood for sleeping, it’s probably best to use a number of smaller lamps or wall lights, rather than a main light. This would produce cosy, soft lighting – the kind that helps your brain to switch off so you can fully relax. To help you wind down after a tough day, a traditional table lamp such as the Regal Table Lamp could be the one. The white finish is very beautiful, but unobtrusive – a classic design. (A cream alternative is also available)

Or, for even greater control over light emittance, take a look at the Suzie Cream Touch Table Lamp. This bedroom light is three stage touch dimmable. Have it on the lowest setting for sleep and relaxation – crank it up when reading or on your laptop. Also great for romancing. The satin chrome Base and faux suede shade gives a modern twist on a classic design.

A ladies’ choice

Ladies, if you have created the perfect women’s boudoir and need a ceiling light that fits, the wonderfully glamorous Sassari 5 Light Semi-Flush could be the perfect choice. This polished chrome light with facetted glass droplets will add sparkle to any female room. This is a compact semi-flush fitting so it is well suited to rooms with lower ceilings or if you just want to add a touch of discreet glamour.

Say goodbye to the staid, hello to the opulence

If opulence is your middle name, then the Katie 5 Light Chandelier Decorative chandelier with acrylic arms and crystal decoration could be for you. This eye-catching light is completely dimmable, again allowing you to adjust the light to suit your mood. Create something special in your bedroom, by turning the light to high – the crystal drops will create sparkle that will lift your mood. If a softer light in the bedroom is your thing, simply turn it down.

For a ceiling light that is eye-catching, but won’t distract you from other tasks, choose the Phantom 7 Light Fitting. This ceiling light creates instant atmosphere thanks to its polished chrome finish and white shade design. Elegant but understated, you will be relaxed yet invigorated when using this lovely light.

Enlighten your evening

If the person hiding under the duvet reading with a torch is you, never fear – we have a range of reading lights that will create the exact right light for reading by, without disturbing your partner. An excellent choice is the Chamonix Reading Light. This polished chrome bedroom light has an LED reading light with snake neck that makes it easy to direct the light to exactly where you want it. You can have the white shade and reading light on at the same time, or either one that suits the task you are undertaking. Pinpoint that novel you can’t put down without pinpointing your partner’s face. This is an elegant but wholly contemporary choice.

For a more classic reading light, take a look at the Junius Wall Light Satin Chrome. This reading light doesn’t have an LED but still keeps the light contained to where it should be. You’ll be able to steam through your reading without disturbing anyone.

“Let there be ambience…”

You may want to choose lots of smaller lights over using a main light in your bedroom. This is great for casting shadows, warm glow and an atmosphere that is designed to relax you. The classically understated Axton Small Wall Light can help you do just that. It comes in an unobtrusive matt ceramic finish (and a choice of sizes), which can be left neutral or painted to match a colour scheme. If your bedroom is a haven from the rest of the world, use this wall light to help optimise its effect on you. Use one or two for a more subtle impact, or a larger number for more statement lighting.

Lighting with personality

If you want your bedroom to make a different kind of statement – if it’s the place you feel you can express that more creative side to your personality, choose the Italian-made Oxford Twin Wall Light. The classic design combines with the contemporary clear 24% lead crystal and polished chrome finish for a more dramatic impact. If you work in a staid office by day but want to imagine you’re in your bat cave at night, then this is the light for you.
