You might not always give much thought to the light that sits outside your front door, but these hard-working lights perform a range of useful duties. Your outside light welcomes you home, welcomes your guests, and effectively introduces your house. You can choose from a range of outside lights to perfectly represents your sense of taste, making that perfect addition to the outside of your home, whether you prefer a sleek, modern look or are more of a traditionalist.

Safety first

Perhaps even more important than style and warmth, though, is security. Not only will an outside light allow you to see clearly who’s coming to your door. It will also bathe you in light as you look for your keys when you come home on dark winter evenings. You can also use your outside light to make your place look ‘lived in’ when you’re away.

Top outside lights

There are many different styles of outside light on the market, to suit your style, pocket and lighting requirements. One of the most popular is the Vejers down wall light, which is a wall-mounted model in a corrosion-resistant black finish. This Danish-made unit brings a touch of European style to your house, with stylish vanes and a sturdy build that will resist the worst of the British weather.

As its name suggests, the Horizon Bulkhead will bring clean, contemporary and hardwearing style to your doorstep. It has a black-finished polycarbonate casing, a modern-looking ribbed diffuser, and a large frosted opal dome, providing plenty of light.

The Oslo outdoor wall light is not just a pretty face, though it is certainly that, with a modernist stainless steel finish and a barred window. It’s also packed with features, including a passive infra-red sensor( PIR), which will switch the light on when anything moves within 10 metres. You can also customise the brightness of the light and the length of time it’s on for, to suit your needs.

If you don’t need all those features, but like the style of the Oslo light, another option would be the Mini Seine Low Energy Wall Light. This light offers a similar contemporary combination of stainless steel and bars of light, but in a straightforward low energy light that will provide great results and save you money on your energy bills. A durable finish means the Mini Seine can put up with a range of weather conditions.

If you are looking for a more traditional style of light for your doorstep, the Norfolk Wall Hanging Lantern offers a classic lantern shape in black. Finishing off the design, leaded glass panels look great and add wonderful texture to the light produced. The Norfolk lantern is also available as a Pedestal lantern, so you can perch it anywhere you like.

If you have a porch with a high ceiling, or are looking to hang a light from an arch, the Luxembourg pendant may well be exactly what you need. With a high quality vintage-effect rust finish and a glass shade, this lamp will bring classic European style to your house or garden.

Not just for your doorstep

These lights aren’t limited to porches and doorsteps either. You can use them to create stylish patio lighting, shed light on the alley down the side of your house if you live in a semi or a detached house. They’re also great for lighting up car-ports and storage areas, and if you’re lucky enough to have a pool, you can use them to add light for evening swims or pool-side al fresco dining (when it stops raining).
