‘Hygge’ up your home with these cosy lighting tips

The Danish word Hygge (pronounced as hoo-ga) cannot be directly translated to any English word, but it involves appreciation of the small things in life, cosy and peaceful moments, and being surrounded by a feeling of joy and wellbeing. No wonder then that Denmark is frequently cited as one of the happiest countries on earth.

Lighting is one of the simplest ways to create a warm and cosy atmosphere in the home, especially now that the temperature is dropping and the nights are drawing in. Here are some of our favourite lighting tips for ‘hygge-ifying’ your home to create your own happy place this winter.

Candlelight delight

Nothing says hygge more than enjoying a cosy retreat away from the harsh cold outdoors. Imagine that feeling of putting your feet up and relaxing on the sofa after a long day, in the comfort of the soft warm glow of a flickering candle. Better still, LED candles create all of that cosiness without a naked flame - ideal if you have children around, or if you drift off to sleep.

Majestic fairy lights

There is something quite magical about looking up at the twinkling stars on a dark night - some might describe this as a hygge feeling. Fairy lights are an ideal way to bring this charm into the warmth and comfort of your own home.

Fairy lights are available in a wide range of shapes, colours, and sizes, and can be used in a variety of ways - from wrapping them around bookshelves and mantelpieces, to clustering them into large glass vases and bowls - these lights are as flexible as they are magical.

Get personal with smart lighting

Different times of day and seasonality can drastically change the look and feel of a room. For this reason, lighting needs to be adaptable to different situations and times of year, and smart lighting is the perfect solution for achieving this. Smart lighting allows for full control over the colour and brightness of lighting, which is ideal for when you need to change the ambiance - simply pick up your smartphone, open the app, and choose a colour that matches your mood.

Variety is everything

When it comes to hygging up your home with lighting, there are definitely no hard and fast rules to follow. Using a variety of light sources at different levels - floor lamps, table lamps, wall lights, pendants, and accessories - can certainly help, but ultimately it comes down to what makes you feel comfortable.
