Just because you have low ceilings it doesn’t necessarily mean that they can’t be adorned with beautiful light fittings; it just means that you should think out of the box and opt for designs that sit flush with the ceiling, or choose pendants that have adjustable heights. But rest assured the choice of styles for low ceiling lights is vast, so you won’t need to make sacrifices when comes to appearance.

If you are aiming for a decadent and glamourous look for your dining room, then a ceiling light in a metallic finish, such as polished gold or antique copper with glass or crystal detailing would work well. The crystal shades help reflect the light and make pretty patterns on the ceiling, whilst the position and size of the light means you won’t lose any precious space overhead. If you have a large space to light with low ceilings, opt for a large drum-shaped shade with a diffuser which will help to reflect lots of light off the ceiling. A dish shaped ‘uplighter’ style of light will send the light straight up to the ceiling where it will bounce off and help distribute the light effectively for you. Light colours reflect light and darker colours absorb it, so keep this in mind when you’re decorating any room with a low ceiling.

For bathrooms and wet rooms, a flush ceiling light is a necessity. It’s important that moisture from steam or splashes of water doesn’t penetrate the light fitting and cause damage, and a flush glass or polycarbonate shade will ensure this doesn’t happen. Look for the IP rating when selecting lights for use in bathrooms. This stands for Ingress Protection and the higher the IP rating (i.e. IP57) the more resistant to damage from moisture the light is.

Hallways, utility rooms and porches tend to have lower ceilings and are often forgotten when it comes to selecting the right light; however, choosing the right ceiling light for these low ceilinged rooms can create the illusion of space and depth.
