We Love Chandeliers

Chandeliers have always been seen as a statement of style, luxury and affluence. If you’re looking for a way to add that extra wow-factor and sense of glamour to your home, then consider installing a chandelier. Their stunning and graceful features make chandeliers the perfect centrepiece for any room, but it is important to consider the qualities of each room before making your selection to ensure that you pick the perfect chandelier.

A brief history of the chandelier

The earliest chandeliers had a very simple design and consisted of a wooden cross with candles placed at each end. They were introduced as an alternative to wall sconces, or handheld candles, as they provided a more even spread of light throughout a room.

Chandeliers became popular in the 15th century, where they we used as decorative features in grand palaces, and for illuminating churches and abbeys. It was also around this time that chandeliers with metal and gold fittings started to appear in the houses of the wealthy.

The first crystal chandelier was introduced in the late 16th century. It was initially designed using natural rock crystal, a semi-precious stone that was extremely difficult to cut, making it a highly expensive item for any home. Because of this, the rock crystal chandelier was only accessible to a very small - and very rich - group of people.

Candles remained in use until the 18th century, but were gradually phased out with the introduction of electric and gas lighting. A lot of modern chandeliers still take their inspiration from historic designs, with many incorporating glass sconces, crystal droplets, and faux candles that mimic their old wax equivalents.
