Living Room

When thinking of lighting for the living room, individuals need to think of the activities that will be carried out in that room, whether it be watching the TV, reading, relaxing or lighting for plants or artwork. The lighting to be applied should not only be comfortable but flexible for the various tasks.

To create ambiance in the room you can have a collection of lights – a central pendant for the main light and table lamps, wall lights and floor lamps to lighten up dark corners.

For pictures a picture light or a spotlight can be placed above the picture to create illumination. If lighting is required for small living rooms, then lighting an entire wall could be an option using recessed ceiling light fittings, single spotlights or uplighters that will make a room feel larger and taller.

To create a cosy atmosphere table lamps and floor lamps can be placed on surfaces around the room to radiate light inwards. To enhance a fireplace, recessed lights can be placed in the ceiling above the mantle to create a graze effect

In terms of control, a dimmer can be used to alternate the different levels of lighting.

Dining Room

The right lighting is required for the dining room to fit in the mood for different occasions. The main focus of this room should be the dining table. Adequate ambient light is needed to allow you to see objects on the table yet not too much that will dazzle you.

A pendant light above a round table is always good, or, if you have a long table then a series of pendants will be more and stylish. Downlights can also be fitted and positioned to the center of the table. Very popular rise and fall pendants are commonly used above dining tables and when lowered down can create an intimate atmosphere.

Apart from lighting focused on the table, wall lights, table lamps and uplighters can be used as background lighting.

The use of dimmers can help the level of control on the lighting for the precise mood setting for the room.

Kitchen

The kitchen requires a range of lighting, since it is one of the most frequently used rooms in the house. Various tasks are conducted so a variety of lighting for cooking, eating and kitchen objects will be required. The lighting for the kitchen can come in different styles and finishes, so it’s best to make sure that it co-ordinates with the current design.

When cooking, lighting above the stove or counter tops would help visibility and while soft lighting over the tabletops prevents eye straining and too much brightness. The use of a dimmer light helps individuals to have control over the brightness of the room.

Under cupboard lighting can help provide lighting for specific tasks conducted in a specific area, thus helping an individual to wash the dishes or chop onions without chopping off their finger. These fixtures can be placed on the wall or, under the cabinet facing out or to the bottom of the counter facing the counter.

>To draw attention to a piece of artwork or china tea collection then spotlights may be used to focus on such objects. Meanwhile decorative pendants and stylish fittings will create the right mood and ambiance.
